A whimsical brand of fiber and resin art from the perspective of a queer Asian-American, incorporating things she loves. Handmade from a home studio in Minneapolis, MN.

About the Artist

Annie Chen (she/they) is a Queer, second generation Taiwanese/Chinese American based in the Homeland of the Dakota people, Minneapolis. A youth worker focused on disparities in race, gender and education, she is a multidisciplinary artist focused mainly on fiber arts. She enjoys exploring the intersections of art and identity through her craft as well as using it as a catalyst for change with other BIPOC artists. When not crafting, she can be found snuggling her dog, Ziggy Stardust, playing dungeons & dragons, and taking naps.

(小籠包和朋友)

Embroidery hoops, ribbon, felt, batting, embroidery floss and safety eyes
February 2024

For many diasporic communities of color, including my own, food is ingrained with ways to find identity and stay connected with culture. When thinking about Lunar New Year, inevitably, food is often at the center of my thoughts. From eating jiao zi (餃子 dumplings) because they look like money, or the number of dishes on the table, food becomes a symbol of successfully ringing in the new year.

“Generational Talks”

Hand embroidery, applique, and free motion quilting on fabric
July 2020

This quilt is inspired by “Letters for Black Lives,” an open letter project on Anti-Blackness. Through crowdsourcing, it creates a script in native languages to bridge the generational gap in immigrant families and have a frank discussion about race.I chose a primarily yellow and black color scheme as a nod to the ‘70s “Yellow Peril Supports Black Power” sentiment. Too often Asian American communities are put in as buffers between Black and white communities. Whether it is the model minority myth, scapegoating for violence, or perpetual foreigner stereotypes, this tactic distracts from white supremacy. I love knowing this rich history of Black and Asian solidarity.

"Entralink"

Machine piecing and quilting on fabric
May 2017

Named for the community feature of Pokemon Black & White, this quilt is about connection, and what better to represent communities than circles? Circles are such a big part of community. The power is shared in a circle, where everyone can see and speak and share.

“Bridge in June"

Paper piecing, hand quilting, applique, and e-textiles on fabric
July 2016

This quilt is inspired by the 35W Bridge in Minneapolis. During the month of June this bridge is light in rainbow colors in honor of Pride. The reason we celebrate Pride now in such a robust way in Minneapolis is because of Queer Trans women of color, Marsha P. Johnson and Slyvia Rivera. I have recreated this in quilt form with LED lights to light up the bridge and honor those who fought against racism before us.
